About Yamagata University

    Yamagata University is a public university that is graded as one of high research and education universities and second highest university in northeast area of Japan. We have four campuses in Yamagata State locating 2.5 hours from Tokyo. Also, in engineering department, there are world-class contributions in material, electronic, robotic, computer hardware design, and information science and engineering.


About our laboratory

    Matsuo lab in Graduate school of Science and Engineering in Yamagata University. We focus on the research in E-commerce, Career Service Systems, Agent-based Negotiations, Qualitative Reasoning and Simulation, Artificial Intelligence, Tourism Informatics, Disaster Information Systems, Software Engineering, Environment Information, Simulation and Analysis, and Industrial Informatics. In addition to the above, we have a lot of contributions in material/chemical informatics, e-learning systems, media informatics, and information design.

Prof. Tokuro Matsuo

    Dr. Tokuro Matsuo is an associate professor in Yamagata University from 2006. He got his Ph.D.(2006) in graduate school of engineering in Nagoya Institute of Technology that is one of top-class engineering institute in Japan. He recruited as a tenured associate professor from Yamagata University in 2006 when he was a Ph.D. student. His academic contributions include over 40 grants and awards, seven patents, and over 100 journals and international conference publications. Also, his students are awarded from the university and academic societies every year.
    As his experience, he was a visiting researcher in University of California at Irvine from 2010 to 2011 and a research fellow in SEITI in Central Michigan University since 2010. He was a founder of International Institute of Applied Informatics and is now working as vice-president and secretary general in the institute. He also created three international journal and organized over 15 international conferences and seminars.


Entrance Requirement

  • A person who already got master degree or a person who is working in university
  • A person who have enough ability to speak and write in English.
  • A person whose research field matches with the following area. E-commerce, Career Service Systems, Agent-based Negotiations, Qualitative Reasoning and Simulation, Artificial Intelligence, Tourism Informatics, Disaster Information Systems, Software Engineering, Environment Information, Simulation and Analysis, and Industrial Informatics.


Conditions and Requirements to get Ph.D.

    Normally, you can get Ph.D. in three years if you have three international journal and two international conference publications at least. (But it is better to get the degree with 5 journals and 5 international conference publications.) If you have more research contributions, you may be recruited as associate/assistant professor from other universities.
    In addition to above contributions, if you have enough ability to speak and write in Japanese and English, we give you a letter of reference/recommendation to promote getting academic job in Japan. (Average starting salary is 5,000,000 JPY = 350,000CNY / 70,000,000KRW / 1,800,000TWD / 60,000 USD per year.)


Opportunity to service to the academic society

    We provide you some chances to work as program committee and volunteer in International conferences. Past students had experiences as registration chair and reviewers in international conferences and journals. It may help you to get academic post jobs.


Tuitions / academic fee

    600,000 JPY = 40,000CNY / 8,500,000KRW / 220,000TWD / 7,500USD per year. (If your GPA is high in the master course, you may be eligible for a tuition waiver for three years.)


Government-sponsored foreign student

    If you get a scholarship from your country, it is more than good. However, if you want to be a Japan government-sponsored foreign students, you may apply Japan government-sponsored foreign students scholarship award. Requirement to apply is that you already have master degree and your age is lower than 34 year-old. Also, the GPA is required over about 2.6 to apply to the scholarship (No repayment obligation). The amount of the scholarship is 154,000JPY = 10,000CNY / 2,000,000KRW / 55,000TWD / 1,800USD per month. Also, the government provides one-way flight ticket from your country to Japan. Further, you may be eligible to be discharged the school tuition. If the above requirements are met, the professor makes a letter of nomination for you.


Privately funded foreign student

    You are eligible to apply scholarship award from Japan Student Service Organization. The amount of the scholarship is 65,000JPY = 4,400CNY / 800,000KRW / 23,000TWD / 800USD per month. You may apply this after entrance to the university. Also, if you need more money, you may apply the following scholarship in addition to this.


Interest-free Education Loan

    If you are not a government-sponsored foreign student, you are eligible to apply the interest-free education loan of Japan government. The amount of the scholarship is 130,000JPY = 8,500CNY / 1,800,000KRW / 47,000TWD / 1,500USD per month. At your graduation, you may be selected as exemption from debt.


Research Assistants

    As a research assistant, we provide you monthly salary. The average rate is 200,000JPY = 14,000CNY / 2,800,000KRW / 72,000TWD / 2,400USD per year.


Research fellowship

    If you contributed our research project, you may get incentive salary.


Expense account for your research activity

    You need to prepare a lot of amount of money to promote your research including paper publication, attending conferences, traveling and so on. The minimum rate of expense amount may be over 500,000JPY = 35,000CNY / 7,000,000KRW / 180,000TWD / 6,000USD per year. Most of students spend this expense from above salary, loan and scholarship. In addition to the above expense, you need to prepare seminar fee and so on.


Your research environment

    We prepare new model desktop PC, your desk and space.
    If you make a significant contributes, we prepare laptop PC and travel expense to attend conferences.

    Apartment fee is about 30,000JPY = 1,900CNY / 440,000KRW / 11,000TWD / 370USD per month. Also, you need to prepare a processing fee 100,000JPY = 6,500CNY / 1,500,000KRW / 36,000TWD / 1,200USD when you start to rent.
    Food cost may be 20,000-35,000JPY per month.
